Here’s an interesting article from the New York Times:

We need to find a way to make food and energy production sustainable in the broadest possible sense — looking out for ourselves as well as other species.

Richard comments:

In Hawaii, our challenge is to resist putting too much emphasis on biofuels. Biofuel energy production is farming and will inevitably pit food against fuel. We should emphasize geothermal energy.

  1. Thank you Richard. I agree with you totally– that biofuels are not the way to go on this island (unless you are a rich corporation that is looking for tax credits and you are not concerned about food sustainability).

Please take note this Friday the 6th at 1:30 pm there will be public testimony before the Charter Commission (Hilo Council offices or by videoconferencing) on many Charter amendments of importance — including one to create a County cabinent level department of Energy and Agriculture. We need this level high level platform to address these issues of importance about which this County is lagging far behind. And if you say — wait for the state it is their kuleana you will be waiting for a date well beyond my lifetime. See my blogs about the Charter Commission amendments for this 11/6 Friday – very important: margaretwille.com. If you don’t know what the Charter is — just remember that Charter provisions trump any other County law, code, or ordinance. If the Charter Commission approves these amendments they will be put up for vote in the next election.
