Golden Rice & Why Greenpeace Co-Founder Wants It

Richard Ha writes:

Dr. Patrick Moore, who co-founded Greenpeace, is conducting a public demonstration on June 17th at the Greenpeace France office in Paris, demanding they stop opposing Golden Rice and confirming that they don’t support the destruction of research trials. You can read more about his campaign to Allow Golden Rice Now here.

This less-than-two-minute video very succintly lays out what Golden Rice is (it’s had two genes inserted that adds beta-carotene to the grain, an essential nutrient that provides Vitamin A). Vitamin A is the leading cause of child mortality in the world. A child dies every minute, his video says, because of Vitamin A deficiency.

He’s asking that Greenpeace make an exception to its zero tolerance for GMO stance on humanitarian grounds.

  1. I urge you to read this info on Golden Rice.

The IRRI, the institute overseeing the golden rice trials – has made clear that not only is golden rice not ready to be released but that it is still not a proven means of reducing vitamin A deficiency. To quote the IRRI: “it has not yet been determined whether daily consumption of Golden Rice does improve the vitamin A status of people who are vitamin A deficient and could therefore reduce related conditions such as night blindness.”

And, of course, the reason that golden rice has not, in Singer’s words, “been shown to pose any risk at all to human health or the environment,” is that there has been no research into either of those possibilities – just endless posturing and hype!

Patrick Moore and Peter Singer are 2 paid advocates for this rice. Patrick used to be against nuclear power but is now paid by the industry to change his mind and be a spokesman for the industry.

Peter Singer in his 2002 overview of The Politics of Transhumanism, James Hughes notes not only that Singer’s “writings on the permissibility of euthanizing certain disabled newborns (Kuhse and Singer, 1985)… inspired howls of outrage, and accusations of fascism” but that Singer also “argues, we must employ the new genetic and neurological sciences to identify and modify the aspects of human nature that cause conflict and competition.”

These Biotech people are nuts their slick wall street PR campaigns are very polished presentations, but we live in the information age and sensible people can get the truth. As it turns out the PR Ads from the 1950’s that “DDT is Good for ME” were wrong.

If it were proven that golden rice could help with Vitamin A deficiency, would you approve of it?
