Hawaii Electric Light Co. has requested a 4.2 percent rate increase.

The request, which was submitted to the state Public Utilities Commission on Thursday, would generate about $19.8 million in additional revenue, but would not go into effect until 2013, at the earliest, according to a HELCO press release….

I'm sure there are reasons and justifications for the rate hike. But when will it end?

We need to see a reversal in electricity costs. Why should the Big Island's electricity rates be among the highest in the whole state, when we have all these resources here?

  1. Aloha Ted
There is an advocate for every energy project, there is an advocate for every electricity rate hike. Until now, there has been no advocate for –We The People. http://www.bigislandcommunitycoalition.com/.
We are advocating for the Big Island to get the lowest electricity rates in the state.

  2. Awesome site. Are there any plans to add a forum? I am not a fan of mailing lists and they were big in the 90’s, replaced by forums. It is pretty clear it is going to take a grass roots effort to get HECO/HEI to realize how they are damaging their ohana by their profit priority policies.

  3. We are working on a strategic plan. Right now we have no budget.
My grandson just whipped out the website in a short time.
We are depending on the power of the people. And, the belief that this is an idea whose time has come. What is a forum?
    Aloha

  4. A web forum is an open discussion/information area, membership registration to be able to post. This is an example of the one for AVS (audio video systems):

They are usually running Vbulletin. It is called community software and costs about $200.

It takes quite a bit of administration with SQL experience and security oversight but many of these forums are being run by small handfuls of guys. Maybe you can put a Paypal button on the homepage for contributions to pay and maintain a forum.

One thing about your strategic plan is it needs to present geothermal as a gift and bounty from Pele and that there is nothing about geothermal power that prevents sacred ceremony rites of gratitude and reverence. It needs to be turned around from this distorted concept that a geothermal well is somehow harming Pele, which is silly since Pele can’t be harmed by anything puny humans do. We only live here as long as she allows us and if she is ready to get rid of us, we will know.
